The Westin Sydney – Heritage Afternoon High Tea

Continuing on our high tea journey, we decided to give the Heritage High Tea a go (at The Westin Sydney). I must say that their high level of service really impressed me.

I had made a reservation at around 11pm a few nights before, and they had replied within 20 minutes – this was a personalized email, not an automatic robot ‘do-not-reply’! Then they called me 2 days before to confirm the reservation again, as well as any dietary requirements.

Already a good start to the experience 🙂

Just the beverages menu alone was…4-5 pages! We had such a hard time deciding what to have, but ended up with a mocha and a lychee oolong Jing tea

Et voila! Our tiers of deliciousness arrived. Let me break it down to you, layer by layer, piece by piece.

Savoury:

– Smoked salmon triple stack with caper berries

– Crispy green salad and ocean prawn boat with crostini and lime

– Slow cooked chicken and pickled bell peppers on a spinach toast roll

– Double smoked ham, cheese and cucumber on tomato bread

Scones

– Scones with homemade strawberry jam, raspberry chocolate jam and clotted cream

As a salmon lover, I found this stack really creative as it kind of steers away from the typical bagel or english muffin tradition, but rather a compilation of unique breads. The layering also offered a different texture and ‘spongeyness’ – I don’t know how else to describe it! Generally I don’t like having too much bread as it becomes really dry and dull, but the avocado cemented the piece together nicely.

This golden pan/pot was the best of the sweet tier, mm mmmmm. The golden, crunchy, sweet caramel layer paired with the creamy, soft, velvety vanilla brulèe. I have no words to describe this but that it feels like a warm, soft, sweet cloud melting in your mouth…

The profiteroles were surprisingly not too sweet, but it did feel a little overwhelming with a chocolate slab on top, chocolate cream filling and a chocolate roll all in one ball.

Sweet:

– Crunchy profiteroles with dark Belgium chocolate cream filling

– Classic vanilla crème brulèe with a sweet nutty biscotti

– Glazed caramel mousse with fresh berries and raspberry gel

We were stuffed towards the end and could hardly finish, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience and atmosphere. There was no pressure to rush, and the attendants made sure we were looked after, topping up our water glasses frequently. Definitely recommend this high tea set! Also, for those who enjoy a quirky twist – their Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea looked quite appealing, with purple clock macarons and other fun pieces :p
